A Letter to America, Excellence for the Next 250 Years

As we celebrate America's 250th anniversary, I've found myself reflecting on a simple question.

What kind of organizations will carry our nation through its next 250 years?

Over the past several years, I've had the privilege of meeting leaders from every corner of our country, business executives, educators, healthcare professionals, manufacturers, nonprofit leaders, military leaders, and public servants. Their organizations may be different, but I've noticed something they all have in common.

The organizations making the greatest difference aren't successful because they got lucky. They are successful because their leaders made intentional choices. They built cultures that people believe in. They created systems that continue to improve. They measured what matters. They invested in their people. They learned from setbacks and never stopped asking how they could serve better.

That is what excellence looks like.

As President and CEO of the Baldrige Foundation, I have the privilege of serving as a steward of something I believe is one of America's most valuable national assets. The Baldrige Excellence Framework has never been simply about receiving an award. It is a practical roadmap for building organizations that earn trust, strengthen communities, and create lasting value.

I believe that mission has never been more important.

Two hundred fifty years ago, our founders established a nation built on extraordinary ideals. They understood that freedom, opportunity, and self-government would require each generation to build upon the work of those who came before them.

That responsibility now belongs to us.

America faces no shortage of challenges. Global competition is accelerating. Artificial intelligence is transforming how we work. Workforce expectations continue to evolve. Communities expect more from the organizations that serve them. The questions we face are complex, but the principles required to answer them remain remarkably consistent.

  • Strong leadership.
  • Clear purpose.
  • Continuous improvement.
  • Accountability.
  • A commitment to serving others with excellence.

Those principles have defined the Baldrige community for nearly four decades, and I believe they can help define America's next chapter as well.

The next chapter of our nation's story will not be written only in Washington. It will be written in boardrooms, classrooms, manufacturing plants, hospitals, laboratories, nonprofit organizations, military installations, and city halls across America. It will be written by leaders who choose to improve what they inherited rather than simply manage what they were given.

That is why the Baldrige Foundation continues to invest in the future. Through the Baldrige Excellence Framework, the Institute for Performance Excellence, the National Assessment Center, leadership development, research, and strategic partnerships, we are working to make proven principles of organizational excellence more accessible than ever before.

Our goal is straightforward.

  • To help organizations perform better.
  • To help leaders lead better.
  • To strengthen America's competitiveness, one organization at a time.

When organizations improve, people benefit. Employees find better workplaces. Customers receive better service. Communities become stronger. Innovation accelerates. Trust grows. Those outcomes extend far beyond any single organization. Together, they strengthen our nation.

As we commemorate America 250, I invite you to think about the role your organization can play in shaping our future. Whether you lead a Fortune 500 company, a small business, a school, a hospital, a nonprofit, a government agency, or a community organization, your pursuit of excellence matters.

The founders who signed the Declaration of Independence could not have imagined the America we know today. Yet they believed enough in the future to build something that would outlast them.

I believe our generation has been given a similar responsibility.

We may never sign a document remembered for centuries. But every day we make decisions that shape the organizations people depend on, the communities we serve, and the opportunities we leave to those who follow us.

If we choose excellence in those decisions, day after day and organization after organization, we won't simply celebrate America's first 250 years.

We'll help build an America that is even stronger for the next 250.

Thank you for joining us on that journey. If you have questions, I encourage you to reach out to us so we can assist.
